This is a sweet romance from the 1950s by award-winning author Betty Thomason Owens, shared in celebration of her coming release of ANNABELLE'S JOY.

We hope you LOVE it!

Part 1
Bon Voyage to the Kids!

Annabelle Cross stood with her young cousin, Judith, and best friend, Lillian Wade, at the train station. Annabelle touched her hankie to her lips as Joseph’s little hand pressed against the passenger car’s window. He mouthed words she couldn’t hear but his excitement was evident. His momma blew kisses, and his daddy smiled and waved.

Annabelle fluttered her hankie and tried to keep a smile on her face, though saying goodbye to her family was one of the most difficult things she’d ever done.

Lillian grabbed her hand. “Lord, bless their journey.”

Annabelle nodded, too choked up to speak. God knew her heart.

The train left the station, amid a great amount of noise, westward bound for San Diego. Though she didn’t really envy them the long trip ahead, Annabelle had to admit, she’d love to be with them.

“Hawaii, here they come,” Judith said while tucking a wayward red lock back into her ponytail. She turned her gaze on Annabelle and Lillian. “Well, y’all ready to go?”

Lillian hooked arms with Annabelle’s. “Come on. No use standing here weeping.”

Annabelle couldn’t seem to tear her eyes from the departing train. “Who’s weeping? I don’t see anyone weeping.”

“No, but you will be if you keep watching. Let’s go. Miss Judith has other things to do.”

Judith laughed. “I’m free most of the day. I’m helping with the inventory tonight, though, so I have to be there by closing.”

“Good. We have time to stop for lunch.” Lillian patted Annabelle’s arm. “That’ll cheer you up.”

Any other day, it would. Annabelle took a breath but held her tongue when she caught sight of the smile on her friend’s face. Lillian would return to an empty house. No toddler feet pitter-pattering. No Connie and Alton helping her pass the time. Just long hours of nothing but whatever it was Lillian did in midwinter.

Annabelle knew all about loneliness. She’d made friends with it after Connie married Alton. Though she’d missed that baby boy every day. In the beginning, she’d worn a path over to Sutter’s.

It took some time, but her life settled into a routine after that. She became content. That was mid-summer, right about the time Connie told her they were planning this trip.

The smoked pork on Annabelle’s plate dwindled to nothing, though she didn’t remember eating it, and couldn’t say whether it was tasty or not. She glanced at the others, but they seemed tickled as punch to be here.

All Annabelle could think about was that train, making its way west. Oh, the sights they’d see in the next few days.

“Aunt Annabelle, where are you?”

Annabelle met Judith’s eyes. “I’m sitting right here.”

Lillian scoffed. “Could’ve fooled me. We’ve been waiting for several minutes to know whether you want dessert.” Without waiting for Annabelle’s response, she turned to the waitress. “Bring it on.”

Annabelle frowned. “What did you order?”

“You’ll see when it gets here.” Lillian nodded at Judith.

“Don’t worry, Aunt Annabelle. You’re gonna like it.”

Annabelle figured she’d better come to herself and take part in the conversation. No telling what else those two might decide to do.
Here's how Andrea puts it:

It’s unlike any book of the Bible that you’ve ever read. In Ruth, words like love story, theatrical, and screenplay are accurate descriptors alongside historical, and gospel-centered. Despite its small size, this book is profound enough to explode hope and redemption into your darkest pain and everyday frustrations. It’s a book that’s for everyday people like you and me – longing to be known and yet fully loved anyway, to experience joy even though we are goof-ups more than we ought to be.

Ruth’s message is not presented as a five-point sermon, but as a spectacular, on-stage, romantic drama that woos us into relationship with its characters and storyline. Its message brings grace where we’ve sinned, peace in our devastation, and hope despite impossibilities.

Its love story is not just one between a man and a woman, but between us and Christ - the ultimate lover of our souls. Ruth conveys the love story of Christ coming to redeem His people. Christ is coming for YOU. He’s the only One we can trust to offer real hope and redemption for our eternal future and everyday realities. We can know and love all the Bible words without loving Jesus, but we can’t love Christ without loving His Word. Experiencing Jesus alive and at work in us is essential, possible and awesome!

The host has ripped your ticket for Ruth’s next performance and you’re sitting front row center as His guest of honor. Come expectantly and settle into your seat prayerfully— God has set the stage for you to experience this drama together with Him at this precise time of your life. So let’s bring the real you and me to meet the living Jesus in Ruth so that He can move in honest places like yours and mine. The orchestra is cued, and the curtain is pulling back for Act 1. Ready?
Editor's Note: My grandmother once told me about living through the stock market crash and the subsequent depression. Most political and social issues trickle down into Texas, having an effect long after the actual event. But not the crash. Already reeling from an intense drought, Dallas reacted almost immediately with banks closing, homes going into foreclosure, and businesses shutting down all over the area. My grandmother recalled the breadlines and how, a few years later, her husband left her and her newborn to work on the roads of a national park because that was the only job he could get. Even into her old age, Grandmother hid money in coffee cans and the pockets of old clothes she never wore. We even found a wad of cash in the hem of one of her coats after she passed away. CARLOTTA'S LEGACY makes this time period all-to-real, all over again. MLC

What if life changed in a day’s time, you had to pack up and leave your home to start over in a foreign country? Well maybe, if that foreign country was Umbria, right next door to Tuscany in Italy, it wouldn’t be so bad.

In October of 1929, the stock market crashed, and Rebecca Lewis lost her job at a local bank. Within days, another tragedy struck, and she had to rush to New York City. Her entire world turned upside-down. She had no recourse, but to finalize a proposal and marry that guy in Italy.

Did she love him? She wasn’t sure. But, he had a villa. Actually, he had two. One in Umbria, and another on the coast of Italy. And he was a conte—a count. She’d be a contessa. A contessa, living in the middle of nowhere with a man she admired and respected. And a smile that warmed her heart. He was quite handsome and had that oh-so-sophisticated accent.

He lived far away, and she had no money, so Rebecca called her dearest friend, Nancy Emerson. Robert and Nancy lived in New England, where Robert ran a large, and quite prosperous corporation. Now she had no pride left, so she took a temporary position with Sanderson Industries to make enough money for the trip to Europe.

Her life is in a downhill plunge.

Rebecca Lewis is a reluctant bride-to-be. Marrying Riccardo Alverá, a young Italian count, may seem like a dream come true on the surface, but churning underneath is nothing but trouble, questions, and doubt. Especially since the marriage means leaving the only home she's ever known, possibly for the rest of her life.

The death of her globe-trotting father cements her fate, however. She and her mother have no choice but to set sail for Italy and the virtual stranger who awaits her.

The beauty and tranquility of the Alverá estate fails to ease Rebecca's heart as political unrest shakes the core of Italian society and despair entwines itself around her heart.

Will marrying an Italian count bring Rebecca the love she’s dreamed of, or doom her to relive her past mistakes?

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">Inspiration comes in the oddest and funniest ways.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">While working on Imperfect Bonds, the third book in The Imperfect Series, I hit a snag. The story needed a scene that would show the attraction and antagonism smoldering between my two main (volatile) characters, but all I could come up with was blah-bland. I needed zip, zest, something snappy, sassy, and maybe even a tiny bit spicy.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">I often keep music on in the background while I write, something soft and unobtrusive, typically classical or easy listening. On this particular morning while I struggled with the problematic scene, for whatever reason I had turned the TV to a classic country music channel. The twangy voice of Buck Owens started up in one of his number one hits—I’ve Got a Tiger by the Tail.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">The catchy tune captured my attention and before long I found myself belting out the lyrics along with Buck and his Buckaroos. All the while a new scene began to percolate in the back of my mind—feisty former calf-roping rodeo champion butts heads with supremely confident Navy SEAL-turned-deputy, or How to Hogtie a Deputy: 101.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">The scene didn’t unfold as easily as you might imagine, though. Sometimes what you envision in your mind doesn’t translate into reality. Imagine me, a senior citizen, lying on the floor, contorting through some of scene’s antics to see if they could really work. Yeah, I laughed, too. Now, imagine my honey walking in with a worried look on his face and asking, “Do I need to call 911?”

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">That scene remains one of my all-time faves from the Imperfect archives. I had such a blast writing it!

I’m not super interested in the personal lives of modern English royalty, but even I heard about the recent wedding between American actress Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. Coincidentally, I was even awake during the ceremony and watched them exchange vows via Twitter livestream. It was also via Twitter that I learned how the two met: they were set up by friends!

In the course of surveying other singles for my book The Proper Care and Feeding of Singles, I discovered that most of us aren’t necessarily opposed to set-ups. While we’re sometimes annoyed by our friends’ tactics, we generally appreciate the care and concern. Taking this into account, I added a section to my book recommending a simple, four-step process to help foster killer set-ups. (Note: I’m using the term killer metaphorically here. Please don’t set your friends up with killers. English princes are fine.)

I’m on the cusp of forty and still single. Over the years, I’ve experienced my share of set-ups; and while I used to think I hated them, it turns out I’m only opposed to awkward set-ups with incompatible people forced upon me by well-meaning acquaintances. That’s why Step One in my four-step process is to build good relationships with singles.

Set-ups works best when you now both sides of the equation well enough to judge shared interests, compatibility, and spiritual sensitivity. Once you know your single friends that well, you’re in a good place to set them up with any member of English royalty you so desire.

Providing they’re also single, of course.

A Revisionary rewrites the rules.

A Rogue breaks them.

Which one is she?

Nineteen-year-old Portia Abernathy plans to earn a Dome seat and rewrite the Codex rules to rescue her exiled brother. Her journey demands answers from the past civilization, but uncovering the truth means breaking the rules she set out to rewrite.

Where will the world be in 2149? If citizens forget their past, they will be lost in an identity crisis. That's exactly the state of the American Socialists United (ASU). This dystopian story opens in Cube 1519, a ghetto where the only use for obsolete cell phones is to throw them like rocks at mongrels. Portia and her father survive like many other citizens, with no electricity or technology and no expectation for a better life.

Yet Portia remembers her brother Darius—before he was taken from her. Now that's she's graduated, she determines to get him back. She thinks earning a Dome seat as a Revisionary candidate will be her ticket to rewriting the Codex and reversing his sentence. However, when she receives her draft and arrives at the Crystal Globe University for training, she discovers the world is very different outside her cube and that prisoners like Darius aren't the only ones trapped by the system.

Written for young adults, THE REVISIONARY offers a suspenseful plot, flashbacks to America's Revolutionary era, and rediscovery of the founding values needed to rebuild Portia's unraveling world. "In school, teens hear that if they don't learn from history's lessons, they're destined to repeat them," author Kristen Hogrefe says. "Portia lives in a world where leaders wield ignorance to control citizens. Only when Portia sets out to rescue her brother does she realize the lie she's been living and determines to break free."

Blockbuster novels like The Hunger Games, Divergent, and The Giver popularized the dystopian YA genre. THE REVISIONARY builds a dystopia of a different kind—one that looks backward to find wisdom to move forward to offer an underlying message of heritage and hope.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif;">But what do teens reveal about their feelings in a survey? Well, that’s another matter.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif;">The website StageofLife.com “has spent years working with tens of thousands of teens to pull exclusive statistics” about them. A 2015 survey of high school and college students was conducted to determine whether or not teachers had affected their lives.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif;">The survey found that 98.6% felt a teacher had positively impacted them. Although 64.5% said a teacher had negatively impacted their lives, apparently most survey takers had at least one of the type of teacher we wish for all students. Surprisingly, 81% reported giving their teachers recognition or showing gratitude for positively impacting them. Such affirmation might range from a simple thank you to a gift to a nomination for Teacher of the Year. It’s hard to know for certain but reassuring that even when teens don’t learn to express gratitude or fondness at home, they still might open their hearts to a teacher.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif;">For some teenagers, an unfortunate reality is that a teacher may be the only recognizable positive adult influence in a teen’s life. Thank goodness for teachers who can provide guidance when a child’s parent is absent in one form or another.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif;">But for those of us who do our best in parenting our child, we still might try to get to know his or her teachers. (In spite of my busy life, I wish I had made more of an effort when my daughter was in school.) The result would be beneficial in multiple ways. The parent would set an example for the child by demonstrating regard for the teacher as a fellow human being with his or her own physical and emotional well-being and limitations. The parent would learn first-hand if the teacher reflects the parent’s values and beliefs and could then monitor the student’s work for that teacher if the parent has any concern. Parent and child could have deeper discussions beyond “How was school today?” With the establishment of a real parent-teacher relationship, at first sign of a teen’s academic or behavioral trouble, or complaint about a teacher’s behavior, the parent has a starting place grounded in mutual respect—or at least knowledge of each other.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif;">In the third novel of the Bird Face series, 6 Dates to Disaster, the main character relies on a favorite teacher for guidance in helping a classmate. All of the series books show teachers in a positive light. I wish more teen novels did so. Not that bad teachers don’t exist. But if all the books that teens read portray teachers as selfish, lazy, ignorant, sex-crazed, or mean, how will that affect their respect for good teachers?

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif;">Perhaps a teen you know and care about has benefited from the guidance of a caring teacher. It doesn’t have to be a teen in your family but perhaps one in your community who has had no other adult to guide him. That teen young man or young woman might need your suggestions in showing appropriate appreciation for his or her teacher.

Boy on the Run

The LARAMIE ON THE LAM series teaches youngsters:

The importance and value of depending on their parents, and the joys of visiting interesting, historic, and scenic places around our country.

How to get along with others—even if an "other" is an enemy.

The comfort of knowing God is always watching over.

Laramie Wyoming is not a typical 11-year-old boy—unless typical is being chased by bank robbers all across America!

Eleven-year-old Laramie Wyoming thought he was being polite by holding the door for the men coming out of the bank. But when one of them slips $30,000 into Laramie’s backpack, his world begins to spin out of control.

To make matters worse, Laramie’s family decides to buy a motorhome and travel the country for the next year so his mom can gather research for her travel books. That part sounds like fun, but Laramie is stunned to find out his parents are taking in Prentiss Williams, Laramie’s worst enemy and the meanest kid in school, as a foster child. A year in a motorhome with Prentiss Williams? What were his parents thinking? Laramie would be black and blue the entire year. How will he survive?

The thieves are determined to get that $30,000 back. Even though the money is reported to the police and no longer in Laramie’s possession, the robbers want their loot and will go to any lengths to retrieve it even chasing Laramie, his little sister Cheyenne, Prentiss, and Laramie’s parents all across the United States to get it.

The boys visit and explore across the country and they’re chased the whole way (but have some mysterious help). Read how Laramie and Prentiss outwit, outrun, and battle it out with the thieves during their tumultuous year while learning interesting, historical and just plain cool facts about each location along the way.Marji Laine - Faith Driven Fictionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08863807987324920493noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4460774047984761054.post-87798093470626368492018-04-06T20:40:00.000-05:002018-05-14T18:43:04.246-05:00Doesn't Springtime Inspire!

Is prayer a mighty spiritual weapon or a waste of time? Is it something to be engaged in fiercely, as if wielding a weapon in the midst of a spiritual battle, or is it a just a personal practice to achieve a calmer, more focused and disciplined life? Does prayer really change anything?

Those questions and so many more are discussed inside the pages of this book. The book does not simply offer one writer’s perspective on the topic of prayer. Instead, it delves deep into scripture to see how prayer is presented in God’s word.

The book offers a thorough study of prayer from a Biblical perspective. Moving from Genesis to Revelation, this book looks at instances of prayer as recorded in the Bible, exploring the who, what, where, when, how, and why.

What can be learned from these and how can that knowledge be applied to everyday life?

We pray readers of this book will gain a fresh perspective on prayer, too.
THE PROPER CARE AND FEEDING OF SINGLES offers:

• Eye-opening peek into the unique trials of the single life.
• Insight for the needs of singles in a variety of life situations.
• Documentation and personal quotes from church-going singles.

Every week across America, single members filter into their local congregations to worship, minister, and serve alongside their brothers and sisters in Christ. Although a minority in most congregations, singles nevertheless compose a significant cross-section of the church body. Each blessed and challenged with individual circumstances, Christian singles not only bear a unique burden but also offer diverse perspectives on the Christian life.

Unfortunately, many Christian singles attest to feeling overlooked. Pastors and church leaders, many long married, often find themselves ill-equipped to understand the particular relational, emotional, and spiritual needs of long-term Christian singles. Worse, they’re unaware that they’re underequipped. Married church members, though sympathetic to the needs of their single friends, nevertheless struggle to bridge the divide.

Written by a dedicated Christ-follower and long-term Christian single, The Proper Care and Feeding of Singles addresses the issues with humor and grace, offering practical solutions to strengthen the bonds of love and fellowship within local congregations.
The truth is, families are messy. I am not talking about underwear on the floor or dirty dishes in the sink; I am talking about relationally: parents to children, and sibling to sibling. There are misunderstandings and mistakes that result in hurts so deep that they are hard to forget.

As a theoretical, yet pointed question, I wrote on my household white board, “How many times must we forgive?” Meant as a prompt to have my family ponder, I was surprised when my question actually engaged someone – and they wrote: “7 x 70.” Hoorah, I thought, someone knows their Bible!

I took the opportunity to explain further in two parts, A & B. “A” – 7 is a biblical symbol of perfect completion and 10 is exponential, so perfect completed exponential = ad infinitum = a lot, forever… “B” - Jesus said, “Father forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34) Forgive the ignorant, I said. And, as the homeschooling mom, I figured the conversation was done.

Yet, a day later, another scrawl of a question was written in response to my answer: “But what if they know what they are doing?”

What a great question! How do we forgive someone who knows the hurt they have done?

My green marker hit the whiteboard again: “A people group forgave even a murderer for killing their children; they embraced the killer and openly and publically forgave him and prayed for him. This: reflects what Jesus has done for each one of us. ‘While we were sinners, Christ died for us’ (Romans 5:8) This is called grace-forgiveness. And we are to do likewise.”

Holiday time is upon us all. Turkeys will roast and lights will be strung and gifts and treats and noise will abound. And, truth is: families are messy.

Gatherings can be tense, awkward, and dreaded. May I give you hope to change the landscape for this year’s family holiday gatherings?

I challenge us all, to offer grace at our family gatherings this season. See each member of your family as Jesus sees them: Loved. So, love those the Father has given to us, and forgive, ad infinitum.

About the Author

I have a friend whose parent is going through some memory issues. I've actually known several folks who have dealt with their aging parents recently. Such an emotional and traumatic time.

My friend mentioned that her father had always said, "Life's hard, and then you die." He would laugh about it, make a joke. But as he's aged, she sees the bitterness he's always held.

That statement, made in jest, was his true outlook on life, and now that his filters are failing, his lifelong despair shows.

She has recently changed the statement: "Life is good, and then you get to go see Jesus!"

I guess it has more to do with what's on the inside than the circumstances of life. My friend's father worked hard, but played hard, laughed harder, and has an extensive legacy of children, grandchildren, and friends who love him dearly.

My friend's life is similar, with both blessings and difficulties. But while her father called life hard, she calls it good.

It's all in how you look at it. How you daily see life. If you focus in on all the bad, then life is going to be hard. If you search for the blessings, you'll find them.

Our God is in the details of life. He's there, crafting the circumstances to help you see Him and know that He is near. He's close during the storms, wanting to hold you through your fear and distress. He's also nearby during the celebrations, hoping you'll delight in His blessings and witness that they are from Him.

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13
Strawberry farming.
It gets into your blood, as it did me, a city child who visited her paternal grandparents’ strawberry farm during springs and summers of the 1960s. I loved nature and the miracle of life growing in its many forms. I felt closer to God among newborn chicks and young strawberry plants struggling against a late frost.

That Louisiana farm and others like it in the area inspired the physical setting for my first historical novel, The Other Side of Freedom. I chose a period of American history, the 1920s, because of my interest in Italian immigration and organized crime, as well as other significant changes and events in the U.S., many of which Americans more often associate with big cities.

So what was Louisiana strawberry farming like in the 1920s?

Before tractors became commonplace, small family farms of the decade used mule-drawn plows and produced surprisingly large crops of strawberries that way. Farmers transported their berries by car, pickup truck, and horse-drawn wagons to collection points in the small towns nearby.

Word of delicious strawberries from Louisiana rivaling those produced in California made its way to northern cities like Chicago. The Illinois Central Railroad routed them there, and strawberry towns began to flourish. A box manufacturing company in Independence made specialty crates for the growing industry.

The Louisiana Strawberry Cooperative Association began to use auctions for selling strawberry crops to get farmers the best prices possible. Auction houses sprang up in towns such as Ponchatoula and Hammond. Beautiful and now collectible labels for strawberry crates, flats, and pints were designed and printed for prominent strawberry producers.

Strawberry pickers and packers came from families’ own children, local day laborers, laborers from out of state, and descendants of former slaves from large plantations.

The larger story of strawberry farming in Louisiana is intertwined with the history of the post-Civil War South, Italian and other immigration, developments in commercial art and architecture, and new trends in business practices and shipping. Other states have their own stories as well.

Strawberry farming wasn’t an easy life for anyone, especially in the early days. But by the time I experienced my family’s farm in the 1960s, it was sweet, from a child's perspective. The family farm during strawberry season remains one of the sweetest memories I have.
When my father graduated from high school, my grandfather told him that he could attend college or stay and help work the farm. My father chose to go to college, but guess what he majored in.
We all face things we fear. And, perhaps, children's fears may be more intense. How do
we help them through their fears and teach them to trust God? My children’s book, Really
Rare Rabbits Book 2: Giant Green Ghosts and the Secret at Peppermint Pass is a tool to
help children overcome their fears and trust God. These rare, adorable rabbits take you on
a dangerous journey with them to meet their grandfather. On the way, they face their
fears and learn to trust God.

As a writer, I reap the benefits of researching Bible principles for my children’s books. I
spend time praying and searching verses to incorporate in my stories. Those verses
inevitably cause me to dig deeper for spiritual nuggets to help children, and in the
process, my soul gets stretched. My walk with God grows more intimate as I strive to
impart God’s truth that will impact young lives for Jesus. I love writing for children
because I know how their little minds and hearts quickly soak up God’s Word.

We all go through storms in our lives or face giant obstacles in our paths. Maybe they
aren't the giant green ghosts that my rabbits encounter, but all the same, we cringe when
our giants appear. Children also face their giants. Fi Fi trembles when she meets the
giants, but she remembers a Bible verse tucked away in her heart. "Do not fear; I will
help you" (Isaiah 41:13 NIV).

How about you? Are you facing giants today? Don’t tremble, trust God to slay your
giants. Maybe you aren’t a children’s writer, but just as I wrote how God’s Word helped
Fi Fi, it will help you overcome your fears. And, who knows, maybe you’ll discover God
wants you to write for children.
From time-to-time someone will comment on how difficult it must be to have to co-write with someone.

Guess what? It isn’t! Including the books with Harriet, I have collaborated with two other people on projects, and have worked well with them.

The most important thing in co-writing, after both of you being Christ-followers, is to share very similar theological beliefs and understanding. If these are too dissimilar, the final manuscript will be choppy and inconsistent in presentation of biblical truth throughout the book.

Practically speaking, there are a few things that help make the co-writing process work well.

Pray for each other.

Agree in advance who will write what portions.

Leave your pride behind.

Have the person with the most expertise in Word compile, make changes in, and maintain the combined document.

Be sure to turn on “tracking” so it is easy to see what edits the other person made.

Defend/explain why you think something you wrote should not be changed.

Explain why you think something the other person wrote should be changed.

Flexibility—be prepared for rewrites, edits, and delays.

As you work together, you read and edit each other’s work. The changes you each make in the other person’s writing will help give the book a more consistent writing style and presentation.

Finally, while there are portions of this process that can be tedious, like galley corrections, it is fun to work with another person. And, when you get stuck, they can help make suggestions that jump start your thought processes and make completing the piece easier.

Have fun and don't forget to laugh at yourself!
Last October, it was Hurricane Matthew that chased Fay Lamb and most of the east coast of Florida to higher ground. The launch of her romantic suspense, EVERYBODY'S BROKEN had to be delayed a full week until she could return to her home and help spread the word about her newest book.

This time, Irma visited, not with floods to Fay's area, but with devastating storms and numerous tornadoes. Thankfully, her family and property are fine. Fay's particularly delighted that the outdoor cat she had adopted weathered the storm.

However, Irma left her with spotty electricity and almost no internet access. Nevertheless, despite Hurricane Irma's attempts to delay this book, FROZEN NOTES has launched.

But this book launch is different, with an ironic spin. Fay has committed all of her royalties through the end of 2017 (from all of her books) to go toward hurricane relief. FROZEN NOTES is up on Amazon.com in both e-book and print version. And 100% of the author's royalties will go to Samaritan's Purse for its hurricane relief efforts.
Early morning noises penetrated my sleepy head, along with
the smell of meat frying. Grandma was up making breakfast. A rooster crowed
outside the window. In the distance, a horse nickered and snorted. I rolled out
of bed and got dressed. In the big, country kitchen, I splashed my face with
water from a tin wash pan, then dried off with a thin cotton towel. No morning
showers or baths at Grandma’s house. No indoor plumbing. A bath required hours of hard labor, hauling
in water, heating some on the stove, filling a galvanized tub. It only happened
once a week.

I set the table with Grandma’s mixed-matched dishes, then
set out cups for five—Grandma, my step-grandfather, my two brothers, and me. I
was too hungry to dread the day just yet. That would come as soon as the
breakfast dishes were stacked in the wash pan.

Already, they were gathering in the yard. I could hear their
voices. I peeked out the screen door to see several of the neighbors sitting on
the back of the wagon, ready to go the cotton field. Ready to start the long
day’s work.

I was not. I knew it would be hard work. By noon, I’d be hot
and tired and hungry again. Picking cotton had to be the worst work ever. Especially
for a nine-year-old. Playing hide-and-seek, kick-the-can, or just wandering and
wading in the creek seemed way better. But cotton harvest meant all hands on
deck (Daddy was a sailor, so I heard that a lot).

I envied little brother, because he did get to play. He
played with sticks and rocks in the deep shade of the trees that lined the
field. Sometimes, he even lay down in the dirt and slept. Oh, how I wanted to
be able to do that, too.

These are the memories that wound their way out of my heart
and mind and into the pages of Annabelle’s Ruth and its sequel, Sutter’s
Landing. I’m delighted to share them. Those days were difficult, but what I
remember most is the sunshine, laughter, the camaraderie of the field hands,
and their beautiful voices raised in song as they worked.
