Christmas Project Writing Contest

Several of our Write Integrity Press and Pix-N-Pens authors are joining together to write a Christmas novella and they want to invite one guest to join them in the project.

We don't want to give away all the details at this point, but we need to provide you with a few of them so you'll know if this is something you'd like to participate in.

The Christmas Tree Treasure Hunt will be published online in a "blog hop" by chapters over a two-week period in December, and then published in digital format on December 13th. Each author, and one guest, will write 2000-2500 words for their section, with the story being due November 15th. If you wish to participate, we'll send you the details, and then you write a story matching our theme. Submit your story by the November 15th deadline. The participating authors and I will choose one winner out of all submissions to be included with the project. The winner will be chosen and notified no later than December 1st.

We have lots of fun and surprises in store for the person whose story is chosen as the guest post. This contest is open to international writers, too!

Magnificent Hope Store

We're thrilled and excited to announce the Magnificent Hope store, just in time for Christmas!

Magnificent Hope is such a wonderful part of 2012, and we're happy that she will continue to be with us through merchandise and special appearances all throughout the year. (Shhh ... she's even hosting a Christmas party this year - stay tuned for all the details after Thanksgiving!)

Magnificent Hope was created as the "Flat Stanley" for Write Integrity Press's virtual book tour during the summer of 2012. New Website for Fans of Christian Books


Today, I'm excited to share a new website with you, and have invited the founders of Christian eBooks Today to give us all the details.



Welcome, Jim & Karen Baney.  Can you tell us what Christian eBooks Today.com is all about?

Jim:  Christian eBooks Today.com is a website that is for fans of Christian fiction and nonfiction.  It is a safe place to browse and learn more about great Christian eBooks without worrying about coming across any racy or explicit content.

Why did you start Christian eBooks Today.com?

Karen:  I’ve been an avid reader of Christian fiction since I was a young girl.  But, over the past few years as I started publishing books, I noticed that it was getting harder and harder to browse for Christian eBooks online without coming across some pretty embarrassing and racy covers.  I just wanted to find a good clean Christian romance book and find new authors.

In August, Jim joined the ranks of the unemployed, so I asked him what he thought about helping me launch a site for Christian readers.  It took some convincing, but he finally agreed to do it.

Jim:  Hey!  It didn’t really take much convincing.  I like the idea of being self-employed.

On your Vision and Mission page on the website, you mention edgy Christian fiction.  Can you tell us more about this?

Karen:  Sure.  Over the past few years or even a decade, the Christian fiction market has been changing.  Authors are writing more true-to-life characters that get thrown into some pretty tough circumstances, such as rape, abuse, abandonment, etc.  In fact, some of my novels fall into that category.

Anyway, there is a bit of a divide in readership.  Some readers don’t like the trend, while others prefer it.  We wanted to mention that we accept those types of books on our site so readers are not surprised if they come across something like that.

So, your site includes Christian nonfiction too?

Jim:  Yes.  We include a variety of nonfiction genres, too.  Bible studies, devotionals, self-help, Christian living and much more.  We really want the site to be a place where readers can find any type of Christian eBooks.

Who runs the site, I mean really?

[Karen glances at Jim and giggles.]

Jim:  We joke around.  I’m the chief operations officer and Karen is the CEO.  She has the vision and then I do all the hard work to make it happen.

Karen:  [elbows Jim]  I do some of the hard work, like marketing and writing content.

Jim:  Okay, okay.  I’ll give you that.

Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?

Karen:  Yes.  We have a feature on our website under the “For Readers” menu called “Reader’s Choice”.  This is where readers can fill out a form telling us about great Christian eBooks that they’ve read.  Each week, we will select one submission to appear on our website.  Then, once a month we will randomly choose a winner from all of the submissions (even if they don’t get featured).  The winner receives a $25 gift card from Amazon or Barnes & Noble.  Readers can submit as many eBooks as they want.

About Contagious Hope:


Savannah James, a young New Zealand therapist, volunteers for a six-week mission trip to South Africa. During her journey, she is confronted with AIDS, prostitution, murder, and even a midnight escape to a safe house. Her new friends have struggles of their own, and one may lead them into even more danger.

Will Savannah, Blake, and Pumzile ever be safe again? Will they ever be able to make a difference in the lives of those around them or will their final destination put an end to it all?







How did you come upon the story of Contagious Hope?

Earlier this year, Tracy asked me if I would like to write a novel with a theme of hope. I asked her which country I should use as a setting and she said it was my choice. I then asked God what He wanted and He dropped the entire storyline into my mind.

Have you ever done mission work?

Having lived in Africa for 40 years, I’ve been part of many missions. One memorable one was an ongoing effort to feed impoverished black people in Zimbabwe. As a church, we had access to fields of cabbages and were allowed to go and cut the remnants once the farmer had reaped his crop. These would be taken out to a nearby village where the people were literally starving. My husband and I spent many weekends out there.

Do you miss Africa?

I left Africa at the age of 41 so it was a big part of my life. Occasionally I’ll hear a song or see a picture that makes me yearn to go back – but only for a visit. I firmly believe that God had a specific plan in mind when bringing me to New Zealand and I love my new home.However, I don’t regret my years in Zimbabwe and South Africa and without them I would not have been able to write Contagious Hope. The areas in the book are all familiar to me and in places, fact mingles with fiction.

What was the hardest part about writing this book? 

The hardest part was finding the time. I wanted to write it all day every day but life interfered.

What is your favorite scene of the book?

I like the scene where Savannah and Pumzile have an argument that leads to a midnight conversation overlooking Hillbrow. It’s a time of healing and reconciliation and they discuss how God collects our tears.

Will there be a sequel?

Yes, there will be. The plot is currently incubating and hopefully the book will be available in the first half of 2013.

What are you working on now?

A teenage novel that highlights the dangers and pain of cyber-bullying. Having recently endured this type of abuse for over a year, it’s something very real to me and I know how devastating it can be. I want to offer hope to teens through a fictional story.

And the Winner is ...

Magnificent Hope Attends the Catch the Wave Conference


This past weekend, I, Magnificent Hope, attended the Catch the Wave Conference sponsored by the Christian Author’s Guild. I got to hang out with some great writers, make many new friends, and left the conference inspired and encouraged.

The Facility

Simpsonwood Conference Center, located in Norcross, Georgia, was beautiful. It was not as plush and luxurious as some expected, but it was clean, comfortable, and modern. The staff was exceptional – everyone helpful, friendly, and smiling. It was refreshing – for this nature-loving girl anyway – to be surrounded by trees as we moved from one building to the next. (Sleeping rooms and some meeting rooms were in one building; main meeting room, dining hall, and registration desk were in another.) Wireless internet was readily available all over the facility, and meeting space was more than adequate. The meals were buffet-style, with healthy options like fish, baked chicken, vegetarian lasagna, and an abundant and fresh salad bar.

The Conference

The conference itself is rather small – 50-60 in attendance this year – but the quality is there. Three workshops were taught simultaneously during each session – nine sessions for a total of 27 workshops – and four keynote speakers. Those included Tiffany Colter, freelance writer and writing career coach; Les Stobbe, agent; Lynette Eason, bestselling and award-winning suspense author; and Write Integrity Press's own Tracy Ruckman.

The size of this conference is a GREAT place for beginners to start. Larger conferences can get overwhelming, both in number of people and in workshop options. This conference is manageable and, surprisingly, laid-back enough that everyone should feel comfortable and relaxed. Evenings were free to hang out with other writers, meet with critique groups, or catch-up on work you missed during the day.

The Staff

Conference staff provided exceptional and useful workshops. Some examples include:  Lynette Eason’s Basics of Fiction; Lin Johnson’s How to Get Published; Cynthia L. Simmon’s Using Fiction Techniques for Nonfiction; Steve Miller’s Choosing the Right Publishing Option; Nancy Lohr’s The Business Side of Children’s Publishing. Most, if not all, of the workshops provided handouts and gave ample opportunities for learning and for networking.

The Opportunities

Many conferences, including this one, offer one-on-one opportunities for writers to meet with agents, publishers, editors, and other professionals that can help your career. These 15-minute appointments are usually included in your conference fee, and give you the chance to pitch your project, ask questions, and talk about your work with these professionals face-to-face. Take advantage of that time. Prepare for the conference. Create a one-sheet or a general proposal to take with you to conference, and then take them with you to the appointments. Be passionate about your project, but pitch it succinctly. The writers who will be remembered long after conference are the ones who came prepared, left professional material, and were passionate about their projects.

The Extras

Diana Baker led some incredible worship times at this conference. She played the piano beautifully, and her song choices were encouraging, inspiring, and totally focused to point our eyes and our thoughts right to Jesus.

And that’s our purpose as writers, too, isn’t it? To point people to Jesus?

Week 10: Where in the World is Magnificent Hope?


Magnificent Hope and I got busy publishing a couple more books, so the blog has been rather quiet. Today, we gear up again with a guest post from author Traci Hilton, and another installment of "Where in the World is Magnificent Hope?" When you live two thousand miles away from grandparents, it can be hard to make the kind of memories I shared about in Life Lessons from Mom. You can’t just pick a random afternoon to take a ramble with Grandma and hear stories about her childhood. Six month to a year’s worth of bonding have to be organized and scrunched into seven to nine days at a time.

We had the happy good fortune of having those nine days with the Grandparents in our town this summer, and so planning the life-long memory and lesson-building activities fell on me.

I wanted to balance time spent in the comfort of our little home, playing in our yard, eating around the family table, with going to big, exciting places. I live near Portland, Oregon and have to admit that big, exciting, places are hard to come by around here.

But we did our best. We bundled everyone off to our favorite beach along the Columbia River for a picnic. I’d say this little hideaway is my favorite place … on Earth. Yes, quite likely my favorite place on Earth. Silky sands, warm water (compared to the Pacific Ocean anyway!), wide beaches, quiet and secluded beauty. And since it is August it is even sunny and warm. With shovels in hand and the family dog in tow we spent an afternoon I can only call heavenly.

Whenever we go to the river I bombard the kids with stories from my childhood of camping along the river, riding in boats that bump bump over the wakes made my other boats, and the ship wreck we used to scramble over as kids. Since we don’t have a ski boat, (and the river I tell them stories about isn’t as clean as it used to be) we can’t camp on that island like I used to do. But they get a little taste of what it was like, and so far, they love it.

I said there were not many big and exciting places around these parts. No Disneyland or Six Flags type of fun anyway. But my area does have one very big and exciting feature. A place my family loves to visit. We don’t go that often because it’s about an hour and a half away. The Grandparent’s had driven over the Rocky Mountains to get to us, what was another little drive?

So with Magnificent Hope tucked into the pocket on the back of the passenger seat of the mini-van so that she wouldn’t get crumpled*, our family: (Dad, Mom, Grandma, Grandpa, and two little girls) drove off to the big, exciting, landmark. It’s a great place for a picnic, a hike, and a nerve wracking drive. It boasts fir trees, trillium, Indian paintbrush, Elk, death defying bridges, and a gift shop.

(*Poor Magnificent Hope! I accidentally left her in the van. Also, pictures from our most recent trip managed to travel back to Kansas with the grandparents, so Maggie has found herself photoshopped into a picture at the same big, exciting, location, but last year and with my girls and their Great Grandma.)

Celebrate with Dianne E. Butts!


We're so excited to announce the official "early" release date of Grandparenting Through Obstacles: Overcoming Family Challenges to Reach Your Grandchildren for Christ by Renee Gray-Wilburn and Dianne E. Butts.

To celebrate, I asked each of the authors to share what means the most to them about this book.

Dianne says, "Its goal to reach individuals for Jesus Christ—including not only the grandchildren but possibly their parents. My purpose for writing anything is to bring people to an understanding of Jesus, which then leads them to salvation in Him.

Another meaningful aspect to me is that I got to write the “Grandparents in the Bible” sidebars, so I got to teach God’s Word, and I love that!

My goal is to be 'gathering manna and giving it out.'

When the Israelites wandered in the desert for forty years after leaving slavery in Egypt, they had no food to support them. So every day God gave them bread from heaven to sustain them which they called manna. They gathered it every day (except the day before the Sabbath when they gathered two days worth for the Sabbath also).

 When Jesus came, He said, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven” (John 6:51. See also 6:35, 48).

 My desire is to be gathering daily manna, taking in the sustenance of God’s Word, and then sharing it with others to bring them to eternal life sustained by Jesus, and to whet their appetite to hunger for more of Him."

Magnificent Hope Tours Author's New York Hometown


July 16-27, Magnificent Hope made an amazing journey from Woodstock, Georgia, to the beautiful Adirondack mountains in upstate New York, with author Darryl Green and his family.  Darryl was traveling to New York to promote Jake and the Buggy Melee, and of course, to take a much needed vacation!

The two day ride from Woodstock to the Adirondacks brought Hope through several US states including:  Georgia, Tennessee, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and of course, New York!  Magnificent Hope and the Green family visited several scenic areas on the way including the Shenendoah Valley, middle Pennsylvania, central New York and the Adirondacks.

Hope also accompanied Darryl to two book signings, one at the Old Forge Hardware store and the other at the Old Forge Library, both in New York State.  Ingrid Ehrensbeck, a good friend of the Green family, was kind enough to take several beautiful photos of Hope as she made numerous stops in the Old Forge area.   As an educator and a very spiritual lady, Ingrid quickly embraced Magnificent Hope’s mission and was eager to introduce her to many beautiful areas.

After 10 days in the Adirondacks, it was time to return home.  Hope and the Green family reluctantly said goodbye to the beautiful mountains, friends and family and returned home.  We are all looking forward to the next trip in a few years!
