12 Books of Christmas: THE EXPECTANT FUTURE CHRISTMAS by Sheryl Holmes

There are just some questions that are too big to answer.  Every year at least one of my nine children asks me,
“What do you want for Christmas, Mom?”

Inevitably, I sigh, and deflect, and say,
“Well that’s something for me to think about….”

I never really give an answer to that question…except once – a few years ago, I said:
“Peace. I want Peace for Christmas.”

That year, I got a decorative pillow with the words P. E. A. C. E. embroidered on it.

Every year, I contemplate what I should say – how much do I tell? I know the kids want a tangible answer like, a new pair of slippers, or lipstick, or bottle of lotion…something easy to search for and obtain at the local mall.  Yet, what I really want can’t be found at Target.

Even to this day, I have never given voice to the words that express my deepest desire.

I do believe it is what every Jesus-loving mother wants in her heart of hearts. The desire that God places in a mamma’s heart the moment He begins to knit inside her womb.  The desire that grows stronger and more intense as the years go by and the child grows taller.

Dare I whisper it?
Child, it is love.
Child, it is salvation.
This is what I want for Christmas.
I want it for you.
There is nothing I want more than for my child to know he is loved, by me, by his father, and even more so, by the Father.

I don’t desire to get anything for Christmas
except to know,
you, my child, know you are loved by the Author of life.
I want you, my child, to take that gift of salvation
that was born to us all on that first Christmas.

Is this not exactly what God wants for each of us?

Is this not why He gave us Jesus in the manger?

Ask me again this year, my child.  Ask me:
“What do you want for Christmas, Mom?”

I think, this year, I will not sigh.  I will not deflect.  I will speak an answer definitively louder than a whisper.
“Child, I want you to know you are deeply loved.”

Until you ask me, I am praying, expectantly.

IN hope, I wait.

Grandma's Christmas Cookies:

In love, my mother in-law made these every year for Christmas. When she passed away, I continued, in love, to make these for my husband and my children every year since.  It’s the only cookie they care about having; it’s just not Christmas without them!

This cookie bar is made in three layers:

1st layer - beat ½ cup of better, 1 egg yolk, 2 TBS of water together.  Add in 1 ¼ cup of flour, 1 tsp. of sugar, and 1 tsp. of baking powder.  Press into a 13x9 inch greased pan & bake at 350 degrees for 10 minute.

2nd layer - sprinkle 1 bag of mini chocolate chips onto the hot crusty bottom layer and return it to the oven for 1 minute. Take it out of the oven and smooth the chocolate out with a frosting spreader knife.

3rd layer – beat 2 eggs, ¾ of a cup of sugar together and add in 6 TBS of melted butter, 2 tsp. of vanilla, and 2 cups of finely chopped walnuts and mix til smooth and creamy.  Pour onto the chocolate layer (optional: sprinkle with colored sugar) and bake for 30 minutes.

Cool, and cut into squares using a plastic knife.

About Sheryl's book:

Towdah is one Hebrew word for thanksgiving used in the Scriptures. This song is the author's offering of thanks given despite the suffering and difficult circumstances that she endured while dealing with cancer.

Sheryl says, "I lift up my hands in praise to my Abba Father and I thank Him for what He has done and for what He has not even yet done, but will do, because I trust Him. It is my desire that Towdah: A Cancer Survivor’s Song of Hope will display the sparkle of God in my life and the praise that I cannot keep to myself. Read my story and be encouraged, my friend."

"Here I Am - Use Me, Use My Story" ~ Sheryl Holmes

Please help me welcome today's guest blogger, Sheryl Holmes.

Towdah, pronounced tow (as in the truck) + duh (as in no kidding), is a written testimony of the goodness and graciousness of God.  Towdah: A Cancer Survivor’s Song of Hope is the story that God gave me to share with those willing to read and listen.

I stand in Praise, thanking my Father for how He works.  Mysterious in His ways, He aligns His plans to unfold.  I am awed and compelled to continually say, Here I am, use me – use my story, Towdah,  for your purposes.

People “near,” have both told me and written to me saying, once they started to read, they just couldn’t put it down and had to read it all in one sitting.  A fellow worshipper said, my mother endured cancer, but died from it, and now I am able to understand on a deeper level what she must have gone through…

A woman from “afar,” wrote and relayed she was blessed by the transparency of the spiritual struggle connected to such a journey.

I am often asked, “So, how’s your book doing?”   It is a ponderous question to try and answer as an author; do I measure the answer based upon how many books have been sold?  I think not.  I must base it upon how many hearts have been softened and touched by the honesty of the testimony; and that I will never truly know.  I know only that my book is doing as well as God wants it to be doing.

He opened all the doors for me and clearly directed me and enabled me to have this work published.   I cannot believe that He would do all that if He did not have a plan for it to reach many.  My Father, God will certainly place Towdah into the right hands to promote, pass-on, read, and spread it far and wide in order to foster Praise and direct people to the one true source of Hope.  I am not concerned as to “how well” my book will do because it will do as well as it is intended to do according to the purposes of my Lord.

In the beginning, I thought to myself, Wow, I wrote a book – cool – end of story.  Now I realize it is not the end … it is just the beginning; it is the beginning of a new adventure my Father has given me.  Where He is leading me, or how far He is leading me, I have no idea.  I am just following and willing to go through the open doors!

I invite you to come visit me on my NEW website - Always a Song of Hope.

Magnificent Hope in Sparkles, Taffeta, and a Relay!

Today's Mission Event is written by author Sheryl Holmes.

The sky darkened and it was inevitable as the rumble of thunder came slowly like a growl.  Lightening and an immediate down pour nipped furiously on the heels of another bellow of thunder.  Meanwhile, Magnificent Hope was eagerly slipping into her sparkles and taffeta readying herself for her place alongside me as I prepared to walk my first Survivor’s Lap around the track at the local Relay for Life event.  We both exchanged quizzical and questioning looks between us as we wondered if the event would be canceled due to the foreboding weather upon us.  But, true to New England weather, the rain suddenly stopped and gentle white clouds appeared and the sky returned to a soft blue hue and the early evening sky looked promising.

Gathering in front of the DJ’s podium, Magnificent Hope caught the eye of everyone; she  was dazzling!  People stared and made friendly comments.  Fifty or so of us stood in our purple “survivor” t-shirts – many of us with our caregivers and supporters.  Maggie Hope, as I heard was her nickname, remained by my side, hand in hand with me as we made our way around the track.  I was delighted to display the personification of  the HOPE that sparkles in my heart as a believer and follower of our Lord Jesus Christ.  It was just this HOPE that spurred me on and uplifted me through many a dark day as I battled cancer last year.  Joy filled my soul as I reminisced with the many others walking in front and in back of me in celebration that we are survivors.  Side liners cheered and gave out winsome smiles and good words for all of us.  I cheered inside my heart as I praised my Father in Heaven for the healing hand He had upon me as I endured cancer, allowing me to survive.  My life was sustained. Magnificent Hope prevailed.

Following the walk, Maggie Hope and I greeted people who passed by my table with vivacious “hello’s” as we offered my book Towdah: A Cancer Survivor’s Song of Hope for sale.  Proceeds went to the fundraising efforts of the Relay; this was our mission. Relay for Life is a fundraising event for the American Cancer Society.

It began in 1985 as an oncologist in Tacoma WA decided to run and walk a track for 24 hours in order to raise money for research – through the night to symbolize the fact that cancer never sleeps; he raised $27,000 as people supported and watched  his 24 hr. marathon.  Since then, teams walk in relay style to raise money and support those who have battled cancer and have survived, those who are battling, and those who lost the battle - lighting luminaries in memory of those loved ones.

Magnificent Hope and I are HOPEFUL that those who purchased my book will be encouraged and find that Magnificent Hope is available to all who earnestly seek after and follow our Savior Jesus Christ – doing His will.
